Storage and limits
How much space a workspace has, what counts towards it, and the daily limit on questions.

Every account is on the Free plan, which includes 500 MB of file storage and 10 questions to the assistant per day. Settings → Storage and usage shows where you stand on both.
Storage
The 500 MB belongs to you, not to one workspace. If you own several workspaces (workspaces and access), they share the same 500 MB.
Uploading into a workspace someone else owns uses their space, not yours. The owner is the one who can free space in a workspace, so the space comes out of their allowance.
What counts
The 500 MB is for files, images and video. That page splits it five ways, so you can see what takes up the room:
- Files you uploaded. PDFs, images, spreadsheets and anything else added to a folder. These count.
- Images inside documents. Pictures pasted or dropped into something you wrote. These count too, and the same picture used in several documents is stored once.
- Video inside documents. Clips pasted or dropped into something you wrote. These count at their compressed size. Your browser shrinks a clip before uploading it, so you're charged a fraction of the file you dropped (writing and editing).
- Documents you wrote. The current text of everything written in Filement. Shown so you can see it; it doesn't come out of your 500 MB.
- Earlier versions. The text a document used to have, so you can go back to it (version history). Also shown, also not counted.
Writing isn't what fills an account. A busy workspace of documents and their whole history usually comes to less than a single photo off a phone, so Filement doesn't charge for it. Write and edit as much as you like; the bar in Settings keeps measuring the things that are actually large.
Written text still has an upper bound, a much larger one, separate from the 500 MB. It's there so a workspace used to park an entire library of text hits a limit somewhere. You won't reach it by writing. If a bulk import or an AI tool ever does, it's refused the same way an upload is, with the numbers in the message.
Anything in Trash still counts until it's deleted for good.
These don't count either: search indexes, the summaries Filement builds, and the text it reads out of a PDF or spreadsheet so you can search inside it. Filement makes all of that from what you added, and you can't delete it without deleting the file it came from, so an uploaded PDF costs the size of the PDF and nothing more.
Markdown and plain text you upload (.md, .txt) become documents, exactly like ones written
here. Filement stores them as text, not files, so they don't count against the 500 MB either.
Getting space back
Emptying the Trash is the fastest way. Items there are still stored until they're permanently deleted, which otherwise happens 30 days after deletion.
When a workspace is full, Filement refuses uploads before the file is sent, with the numbers in the message. Nothing already stored is affected.
Questions to the assistant
Ten questions a day, per person. The allowance is your own. The workspace doesn't share it, and asking in someone else's workspace still counts against yours.
- Each question you send counts as one. Replies, retries within an answer and searching don't.
- A question that gets no answer doesn't count. If the model provider fails or takes too long, the assistant says so in the conversation and gives the question back, so you can ask again for free.
- The count resets at midnight UTC.
- The composer tells you when you have three or fewer left.
When you run out, you can still use the panel to save text as a document, which costs nothing. Search keeps working too, including filtering and opening what it finds.
Connected AI tools (agents over MCP) read and write through their own tools, not the assistant panel, so they don't count against this limit.
