Getting started
Create an account, make your first project, add documents, and give them context.
Start2 min read
This takes about five minutes and covers the whole loop: files, notes, a relationship, and a question answered from your own documents.
Create your account
Open the app and choose Create one on the sign-in screen. Enter your email and a password, then type the six-digit code sent to your email. It submits itself on the sixth digit. It expires in 15 minutes; if it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder, then ask for a new one (offered again 30 seconds after the last). Your account comes with a workspace of its own; you can invite people to it later, or create more workspaces.
Make a project
A project is the top-level container for one piece of work: a client engagement, a product, a research effort. Choose New project and give it a name.
Add documents
Inside the project you can:
- Upload files by dragging them in. Any file type uploads and previews. Text and markdown files are also read, so they can be searched and summarised.
- Write a document with New document. Documents are markdown and open in an editor several people can use at once.
- Make folders with New folder, and nest them however you like.
If you upload a file that is already in the workspace, Filement tells you instead of storing a copy. If you upload a different file with the same name, it asks whether this is A newer version of it or A separate document.
Say what things are
Open a document and add a note: one short line saying what it is. "Signed-off requirements from the March call" or "Draft, not agreed yet" is exactly right. Notes on a folder apply to everything inside it. See Notes.
Connect related documents
Drag one document onto another, or use Connect to…, to record a relationship: this one references, responds to, supersedes or is related to that one, with a short reason. Filement will also suggest connections it finds, marked as AI-suggested. See Relationships.
Ask a question
Choose Ask Filement and ask something only your documents can answer, such as "what did the client change in the second version of the requirements?". The answer names the documents it read.
Bring your AI tools
Open Settings → Agents and connect Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another MCP client. It gets the same files, notes and relationships, limited to what you can see. See Connect an agent.
